Droplets, bubbles, and vesicles at chemically structured surfaces

Liquid droplets, gas bubbles, and membrane vesicles which are in contact with chemically structured substrate surfaces can undergo morphological transitions or shape transformations. The structured surfaces considered here consist of two types of surface domains, γ and δ, which attract and repel the droplets, bubbles, and vesicles, respectively. For droplets on a striped γ domain, one has to di...

Nematic films and radially anisotropic Delaunay surfaces.

We develop a theory of axisymmetric surfaces minimizing a combination of surface tension and nematic elastic energies which may be suitable for describing simple film and bubble shapes. As a function of the elastic constant and the applied tension on the bubbles, we find the analogues of the unduloid, sphere, and nodoid in addition to other new surfaces.

Electrohydrodynamic Flow in Nematic Thin Films with Two Free Surfaces

Thin layers of nematic LC with two free surfaces show a peculiar vortex-pattern when subjected to an electric field. In this paper we report some new observations on the vortex motion and we show that the Felici's model of the charge injection from the electrodes cannot account for some experimental results. The lines of a new electrohydrodynamic model are proposed and compared with the experim...

Flow of thin liquid films on chemically structured substrates

Chemically patterned surfaces are of significant interest in the context of microfluidic applications. Miniaturization of such devices will eventually lead to structures on the nano-scale. Whereas on the micron scale purely macroscopic descriptions of liquid flow are valid, on the nanometer scale long-ranged inter-molecular interactions, thermal fluctuations such as capillary waves, and finally...

Supported membranes on chemically structured and rough surfaces.

We present a general linear response description of membrane adhesion at rough or chemically structured surfaces. Our method accounts for nonlocal Van der Waals effects and contains the more approximate (and local) Deryagin approach in a simple limit. Specializing to supported membranes we consider the effects of substrate structure on the membrane adhesion energy and configuration. Adhesion is...
